The latest buzz in the e-reader world is Apple’s most recent addition to their lineup, the iPad. Although many e-readers have been on the market for years, none have taken a majority of the potential readers in the United States, but as the slow migration from print media to digital media continues companies continue to struggle to corner their market.
Although the iPad is mostly identified as being Apple’s e-reader, at this it’s power as an e-reader is primarily propaganda. In essence, the iPad is identified as a tablet PC, similar to a netbook but different. While the iPad will most likely be used as an e-reader, it’s current use is that of a portable computer.
One of the primary components of an e-reader is the ability to connect to wireless connections outside of a Wi-Fi range. At this point, iPad users are required to purchase a unit with 3G capabilities (an additional cost) and register for an additional 3G data plan (a monthly fee) to use the iPad as an e-reader. This combination makes the iPad a “rich man’s e-reader” at this point, prohibiting its use for typical families. Unlike the iPad, the Barnes and Noble Nook e-reader includes both a 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, making it a convenient e-reader whose functions are not obstructed by prohibitive costs.
Currently, the most popular e-reader is the Amazon Kindle. The Amazon Kindle was designed to provide user’s with the most relaxed and expedient reading experience. The Kindle is equipped with an e-ink display, which is considered to be the best for reading because of the soft colors. This is a very different approach than the iPad, which uses the LCD screen while employing it’s e-reader. This is known to cause eye strain and headaches, particularly when users view it for a extended periods.
As the market for e-readers continues to grow, consumers can be sure that the efficiency of the e-readers will continue to grow as well. The Amazon Kindle is currently the most popular choice for e-readers, however with Apple’s track record it is very possible the iPad will take the world by storm and revolutionize the e-reader market.
